Day 6
We started the day off with breakfast at 6:00 AM. We hopped on the buses listened to Sweet Caroline many many MANY times. Our tour guide Eddie and his enthusiastic attitude woke us up in the morning. He was very energetic and helped us wake up. As we reached our destination, we reached an open, little field where we met our hike guide. His name was Freddy. He gave us information about the hike we were going on and about the interesting organisms that we would encounter. We were super lucky and came across spider monkeys! During our 4.5 mile walk, we reached the Thermal Springs. It smelled like sulfur which smells like rotten eggs. Even though the smell was not pleasing, the view and experience was amazing. Some students and teachers put the mud on their faces and treated themselves to a spa day. We then packed up again and went back to check out the Morpho Waterfall. We finally reached the waterfall and we new the walk was worth it. We were able to swim in the waterfall and enjoy some fun getting a little break from experiments. We were able to experience a nice cool down from the crazy heat of Costa Rica. At the end of spectacular and amazing walk with an intelligent guide, Freddy, we enjoyed a non-foreign lunch that contained a drink, potato chips, cookies, and sandwiches. The lunch was very satisfying for every student because it was a way to experience American food at least once just to make students happy and satisfied. After the refreshing and filling lunch, we headed back to Finca La Anita and started to conduct our experiments and get results for our problems and questions. Specifically, my group is conducting research on how distance from a tree affects biodiversity of plants. We started our preliminary experiment just to understand what to expect in our research. After 2 hours of conducting research, Wayzata got to experience what other students experienced with a cooking class, while other students had time to do late experiments if they felt like they could not finish by the deadline or students could finish up for the day and relax to wake up to an all science day.
Mostly sunny today which meant we got to see all three volcanos in the valley on on drive.
A reminder as to why we wear our boots at all times: the venomous Fer de Lance snake!
Saw a few wild flowers on our hike. This one is related to birds of paradise.
It looks dangerous, but this spider is harmless: the needle legged spider
Can you see it? A stick bug.
Cooling off in a waterfall.
The spider monkeys that were interacting with us!
